Working On The Glebe

It is 5 years since people and businesses in Starston raised £11,000 to buy the Glebe Meadow and turn it into a community space that has become appreciated by many people, not just within Starston. The latest addition to the facilities is a new bench to stand in the middle of the Jubilee Orchard. This bench will be officially unveiled on Saturday 8th April by Professor Tim O’Riordan OBE, Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (Norfolk) and Emeritus Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia. It was Tim who performed the meadow opening ceremony back in 2012.

The meadow is managed by a team of people led by Peter Grimble but it does not look after itself. Peter, and a number of volunteers work hard to keep it in good condition and one such working party took place on 21st January. Peter writes:

GM3c“With wonderful support from Starston folk once again, we had a fun morning achieving a successful winter clearance in Glebe Meadow. With 17 people turning out on a fine January morning, the work has put the meadow in a good place for when Spring gets underway. The banks of the Beck were cleared and the inside of the hedge and meadow edge cut back to give new growth a chance. All the piles from cutting and raking were loaded onto Steve’s trailer and taken to the bonfire heap for burning another day. And Church Bank was also cleared to allow the aconites and snowdrops to show themselves.

It was such a help to have the roadside hedge cut so well and our thanks this year go to Ralph Moore and Duncan for doing such a good job which made the volunteers’ hand work more achievable.

GM4cThe picnic table was the base for well-earned coffee and rock cakes from Sue, and allowed us all to relax and chat after our exertions. Glebe Meadow continues to be a valuable social centre in Starston and brings people together from different parts of the village, and even valued helpers from Harleston.  Huge thanks to all who came to help.”
