Starston Church awarded Heritage Lottery Fund Grant

St Margaret’s Church, Starston, Norfolk wins National Lottery support

Starston churchStarston PCC is pleased to announce that it has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project entitled “Keeping the water out and bringing the community in”.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players St. Margaret’s has been awarded a development grant of £28,000 to develop itsplans and apply for a full grant of £222,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The funding will go towards toward the cost of extensive repairs to the main fabric of the church; repairs and improvements that will ultimately cost over £300,000. From development stage to completion of the project will take at least two years.

The project aims to carry out essential conservation work to the building, which will keep it watertight and dry and ensure that visitors to the church will be able to do so in the knowledge that it is a safe, weatherproof and welcoming building to enjoy. Furthermore, with the addition of toilet and kitchenette facilities inside the church it will encourage more use by the local community and will be more accommodating for weddings and funerals. It will also encourage more people, particularly from the local community to attend community based events that will be organised in the church.

During the project the PCC will invite volunteers from the local community to become involved and will be communicating details of progress of the project together with proposals for future usage of the church to the wider public in various ways.

St Margaret’s Church is the only Grade 1 listed building in the village. It is a very attractive medieval building, delightful in scale and setting on a little hill above a small river. The quirky chequer-board flush-work around the tower parapet and along the Knave wall tops, and the decorative use of flint-work on the porch and Chancel walls set off the other architectural features with a unique charm.

It will enable us to widen the scope of the church for more community based events and social entertainment in the knowledge that we are a step closer to conserving it for future generations.”
